While the rollback or failure of DEI programs, including the concerns over merit-based hiring, may upset many in the HR world, they offer us lessons on if they are necessary or how to do better.
So you think Pete Hegseth's promotion to the Secretary of Defense is merit-based? or based on his alliance with the look, thoughts, and doing the will of the current administration? Two organizations ousted him over his pillaging of the two Veteran organizations and is a TV presenter who led a platoon in his highest-ranking position? He is the OG DEI hire.
"As HR professionals, our role isn't just to implement these programs but to critically evaluate, adapt, and champion a workplace where diversity, equity, and inclusion are not promoted through classes or programs, they are lived realities, balanced with meritocratic principles."
Thanks for your comment… I was not part of any federal government hiring process, so it’s hard to weigh in on whether Hesketh is the best merit based choice for the office. I will say that it’s not a promotion as much as it is an appointment. Based on what I’ve seen of him online with military personnel, he seems to have the overwhelming support of the service members he’s leading.
I don't know Dan but sidestepping an opinion by saying you were not involved with the appointment is an easy out. As much as you see overwhelming support, there are equal if not more, high ranking members of the military stating that he is not remotely qualified - now if we consider TV personalities as a qualification - he and our current administration abound with such appointments. It's pick your bigotry season and call it DEI.
I’m not sidestepping anything… if you want my personal opinion on the appointment, I think it’s a great one.
If you want my opinion as an HR professional as to whether Hesketh is the most qualified, merit based, hire for the role, I cannot provide an opinion since I am unsure on the pool of candidates that was considered prior to the preferred candidate being selected.
